About the conference

The New Zealand National Bullying Prevention Conference is an initiative by a community of stakeholders from different fields of practice: education, health, social work, psychology, human rights, employment relations.

This is the second conference of its kind in New Zealand. It is a strategic event that aims to bring together all the stakeholders currently involved in research, education or social services addressing bullying in New Zealand.

Bullying is becoming a greater concern for the wellbeing of children and adults impacted by this form of aggressive behaviour. The conference is an opportunity for stakeholders to have one voice and a unified response to acts of bullying. Individuals and organisations are invited to be part of this unique initiative by endorsing, partnering, sponsoring or any other response of your choice. The conference is unique because of its focus on an interdisciplinary, multi-professional and broad-based integrated approach.

Conference content will be delivered through symposium sessions that highlight the voices of targets and witnesses to bullying, as well as workshops and keynote speakers.

All are welcome - whether you are a professional, parent, student or young person.

About the keynote speaker

Dr James Brown is currently an Associate Professor at Indiana University’s School of Social Work and a former school social worker with over 13 years of experience. He has extensively researched and evaluated risk and protective factors in the United States’ statutes. His examination of the experiences parents have with their bullied children covered the impacts on parental mental health and the effects of the school’s response. His evaluation of an empathy-based bullying prevention programme in an urban school district led him to look into multiple stakeholders’ experiences in aligning prevention language and outlining goals for the community and the agencies that provide services. Recently, Dr Brown developed an online multicultural facilitated tool that helps youth identify their own roles in bullying, school “hotspots,” and options for how to reach out for assistance with bullying. Currently, he is working on two additional online tools for parents of bullied children and for parents of children who bully.
