We are a story-making species. As soon as two people get-together, we have story.

This is the way we document our lives, our traditions, our history. Civilisation is composed of his-story and her-story. But what does story mean to a child who is too young to make sense of life experience? How do we offer entertaining stories that give meaning to the child’s stage of development? How do we present these stories? In what ways do teachers’ teaching meet childrens’ enthusiasm for meaningful story?

Joy Cowley owes much to the teachers who have invited her into their classrooms, enabling her to learn from children. She has written more than a thousand early-reading books and received an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Massey University for her work with early reading.
